KEYNOTE: SUSTAINABILITY & RESILIENCY

JOSH SAWISLAK, AICP, PRINCIPLE, CLIO STRATEGIES, LLC. 

Today’s construction is about more than just places to live and work, it’s about comfort, protection, safety and security. This session covers where and how the ubiquity of sensors and new access to data are helping us understand construction impacts and long-term facility operations on climate change and sustainable development goals. Material science advancements in areas such as concrete, roofing and insulation and construction building technology can help pave the way to more sustainable practices and performance, but we need to be able to assess and quantify those benefits to recognize the value in the business case.

During this sessions, attendees will: 

  • Understand technologies that exist that can be applied to architecture firms, that build a unique business case for profit, that make sense to implement, and that provide a strong value proposition for future strategy.
  • Understand the barriers and challenges that they face and how solving for them will reduce construction’s negative impact on the environment to create a cleaner future for today and tomorrow.
  • Understand practical design and specification strategies that address gaps in the process and that can be more prescriptive to reduce the negative impacts on the environment so that future construction will not damage the environment or create a threat to the general population.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER: 

Global Resilience and Sustainability Expert | Professional Speaker | 

Josh Sawislak is an internationally recognized expert on climate and disaster resilience and sustainable development and is the principal of Clio Strategies LLC. He advises governments, corporations, international organizations, and NGOs on building sustainable and resilient infrastructure and business opportunities in both the developed and developing world. His expertise includes the emerging efforts around assessing and pricing climate and disaster risk in financial portfolios and corporate facility assets as well as continuity planning and disaster risk reduction for communities and the private sector. He serves as the managing director of the financial sector work for the Global Center for Climate Resilience and holds concurrent appointments as a Senior Advisor to the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES), a strategic advisor to the climate risk advisory firm Four Twenty Seven, and a professional affiliate of the Center Urban and Environmental Solutions (CUES) at Florida Atlantic University.

In 2015 Mr. Sawislak served as the global director of resilience for the infrastructure services firm AECOM. In this role, he worked across the entire enterprise of AECOM’s offerings to public and private sector clients in planning, design, construction, finance, operations, and development to help create and leverage resilient strategies to address issues such as sustainability, climate change, disaster preparedness, and enterprise risk management.

Mr. Sawislak is an environmental and transportation planner and a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners and earned a degree in political science from The George Washington University and a certificate in infrastructure development from the Harvard Kennedy School. He serves on the board of directors for evacuteer.org and is an advisor to several other organizations and programs in support of resilience and sustainability.

RESINOUS FLOOR AND WATER SYSTEMS FOR FOOD & BEVERAGE ENVIRONMENTS – 10:30AM SESSION

This course explores the process of selecting and specifying high performance resinous floor and wall systems for food and beverage processing facilities. It familiarizes the attendee with the latest system technologies and locations within food and beverage environments where resinous floor and wall systems offer superior performance, a balance between clean ability and safety, prevention of the proliferation of mold and harmful microorganisms and meeting the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2014 (FSMA) regulations and guidelines.

MASONRY VENEER CLADDING SYSTEMS INSTALLATION, CODE COMPLIANCE & CONTINUOUS INSULATION – 10:30AM SESSION  

This course reviews the various installation methods and types of Thin Veneer Wall Systems, and the benefits and limitations of each. Participants will understand how changes in the Energy Codes requiring Continuous Insulation can poses challenges in installation methods and review the available options in installation methods to meet these requirements.

WHAT MAKES A THERMOPLASTIC ROOF SUSTAINABLE? – 10:30AM SESSION

This course explores the importance of proven performance and membrane durability (the longer the roofing system lasts, the less roofing systems end up in a landfill); Understanding the difference between Post-industrial, Pre-Consumer and Post-Consumer recycling and the benefits of choosing a product that recycles post-consumer back into the new membrane (full circle recycling);  A knowledge of the natural fires resistant properties of some roofing membranes and a review of how different fire resistant roofing membranes perform when actually on fire; An understating of the term “life cycle” and how specifying a roofing system that has a low impact on life cycle is beneficial not only for environment, but an owner wallet.

FIBER REINFORCED CONCRETE NOW AND IN THE FUTURE – 1PM SESSION

Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC) is a “new” structural material which is gaining increasing acceptance around the globe and in ICC (International Code Council).  FRC improves many engineering properties of concrete; ductility, flexural toughness, impact resistance and crack control.  Utilizing the features of FRC have led to common applications in the market place and growing number of new applications.  Learn about why fibers are used, testing criteria’s and how the testing information is utilized, traditional applications and innovative applications for FRC.

THE ADVANTAGES OF CONTINUOUS INSULATION IN STEEL STUD CONSTRUCTION – 1PM SESSION  

With the ever changing landscape of construction practices, codes and programs, professional are often left asking how, when, where and what products can be used to achieve designs with a sustainable construction perspective. One example is the use of Polyisocyanurate, Polyiso for short, as an insulation material in steel stud building envelop construction. We will uncover the disadvantages of using steel studs without continuous insulation. We will also look towards the future and see what codes, organizations and other groups are doing the push the building envelop design.

LIQUID APPLIED ROOFING AND WATERPROOFING MEMBRANES  – 1PM SESSION

Liquid applied membranes should not be confused with coatings. The effectiveness and versatility of fluid applied membranes often make them the only viable solution for complex waterproofing problems. This seminar will focus on the use of such systems as an alternative to conventional roof systems and a solution to challenging waterproofing problems. The use of these systems in historic preservation, façade repair and building envelope waterproofing will also be examined. Attendees will: 

  • Gain an overall awareness of the various fluid applied roofing & waterproofing membranes.
  • Examine the basic differences between fluid applied membranes and coatings.
  • Review field installation considerations.
